Orange Shirt day

Orange Shirt Day   The Grade 5/6 classes will be hosting a virtual assembly on Wednesday, September 30 at 8:30am. Show your support by wearing ORANGE!       In 1973, six-year old Phyllis Webstad was gifted a brand new orange shirt from her grandmother and wore it to the residential (mission) school she attended in British Columbia. Upon her arrival, school officials removed and discarded the shirt from her and replaced it with a school uniform. This greatly impacted the mental and emotional well-being of Webstad and symbolized that "her feelings never mattered."  September 30 was chosen as the date to commemorate all the children that attended residential schools as it was also the time of year that children had to leave their homes.

I so enjoyed talking to my Room 10 families. You know your children so well. You  have given me valuable insights that will help me support them at school. Please know that you can contact me anytime to give any updates or "intell" that you think will help your child have their best day possible. πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ Here are some pics of your kiddos enjoying their first few weeks! 😁

Music by Mrs. Anderson

From Mrs. Anderson, the Music teacher at Prince of Wales School: Hello Prince of Wales families. For MUSIC Parent teacher interviews this round, please go to your child’s CBE Gmail account and accept Mrs. Anderson’s invite into the Google Music Classroom. Here you will be able to view what we have been up to in September.  If your child has already been into the virtual classroom, have them show you the items posted there. NOTE: the posts won’t be up until  FRIDAY morning, September 25 th . Feel free to write me a quick note in the classroom stream and I will try to respond the same day.  Thank you very much.  Mrs. Patricia Anderson.

We also sorted out feelings, people and emotions that are not expected to be at school. At school we keep our feelings and emotions connected with the group plan. It is unexpected to have super strong feelings at school. At school there are many trained adults to help you manage your day.  Check out the earlier blog post that explains the role of the hippocampus. Fascinating!!!!

Mask Attack

Image
We are growing more comfortable with the new normal, you move you mask! Thank you for sending an extra mask with your child, or two. πŸ˜‰ Washing the mask every day is very important. We all want to keep safe and healthy. Check us out as we rock our masks!

FOOD!

Image
We still have some hungry kiddos! Ask your child if they are eating their lunch before lunch. If so, maybe they do not eat enough at breakfast time. We brainstormed solutions to our food dilemma and decided that packing two sandwiches or main courses would solve the problem.

Tree Cookies

Image
This term we are spreading messages of hope as a school community. Check out the hopes of your children. They have designed a tree cookie with a hope on one side and graphic on the other. It took patience and focus. And we did it!

Breakfast

I do not always have an appetite when I first wake up in the morning. Sometimes you might not feel like eating before you get on the bus.  If you do not eat before you get on the bus, make sure you pack extra food. You might need two sandwiches and three pieces of fruit. You might need a baggie of cereal or a muffin.  Ask your parent to help you pack extra food on those no breakfast days. When you don't eat breakfast you might feel like eating your whole lunch when you get to school. And then you are so hungry at lunch that you get the HANGRIES!

The Amazing Hippocampus!

Image
Today we learned about the hippocampus. Ask your child if they remember why it is called the hippocampus! We made connections on how the hippocampus can soothe the amygdala and stop an amygdala highjack. We looked at how closely the two parts are within the brain. We discussed how important it is to get oxygen into the brain before trying to solve any problem or conflict .  Breathe Breathe Breathe...

September Forms Package

Helpful Hints: Hi there,   Today your paper work package should be in your child’s backpack. All forms need to be filled out and returned as soon as possible. I will try and help out with a few hints. Please call or email me if you have any questions.   Obtaining Dependent Student Information : This allows the staff working with your child to receive information. This may include a doctor or therapist that has a strategy for me to use to support your child. It could be a grandparent or regular babysitter that may need to inform me of an issue regarding things like health, wellness, pick up times, when you are away on holiday or working, or otherwise. It could be a partner that you entrust to pick up your child for every day events like appointments, or emergencies like illness. I recommend adding the names of everyone you think might be connected to your child.  It will save you the trouble of having to quickly add someone, at the last minute.   Releasing Depen...

Masks

Image
Remember to wash your mask every day. Wearing a mask for more than a day can lead to colds and flu too.  Wearing a mask can make you feel thirsty. Bring a clean water bottle to keep at your table every day.

You move you mask!

Image
Welcome Back! I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. It is hard to remember all of the routines after a few days off. Remember to wear a mask when entering the bus and the school. When you are at your table spot in Room 10 you are welcome to take a mask break. It is a good idea to have a spare mask in your backpack. Also, it is dry at school. Kiddos are encouraged to have a water bottle at their table spot. Today a notice went home about picture day. It should be in your child's backpack. Picture day is this Thursday!

First week success!

Image
WOW!!! I can't believe our week is over already. We did so many activities together!! This week we definitely learned how to keep safe and healthy at school. If you move you mask.  And sanitize, sanitize sanitize! But we also did a lot of other learning. YAY! This week we started creating our I WANT MONSTERS . We are learning to control our I wants when we are in a group setting. We are learning how to be the boss of our brains. We can use strategies such as taking a breath, looking around to see what the group plan is, asking for a break and using self talk.  Take a look at some of our creations. They are not even completed and they already look awesome! We have also started our word splash journals. Ask your child how many words they can speed write! We are making connections with words and looking for rhyme, blends, vowel sounds and meaning. We wrote addition math sentences using grid paper and dice. We listened to stories that will help us develop our social skills a...

First day success!

I am so proud of my Room 10 kiddos!!! Today was a big day with so much to  listen and  learn. Everyone worked hard to keep sanitized and masked up whenever asked. Remember, if you move you mask.  Because we have a smaller class size in Room 10 we are fortunate that when we sit at our table spot, we are able to take a mask break. For now, I have supplied  paper bags to store the masks, while breaks are taken. You are welcome to send in a mask container to keep the masks sanitary during mask breaks.  CBE masks were distributed today. Some chose to keep them at school and some chose to bring them home. They seem to fit on the smaller side.  Please send in a water bottle for your child. They are able to refill them at our sink. It is hot and dry during the summer months, especially with a mask. Please ensure your child brings a backpack every day. They will travel with your child throughout the day at recess, lunch and music classes.  Our kiddos are...
